I visited Portmeirion in Wales by the sea in childhood summers where the magical wonderland architecture is full of sea salted verdigris copper patina, Neptunes, mermaids and golden scrolls…

 
 

Femme Fatale

In the 19th century the first widely available green dye was developed using arsenic. Verde green dresses of the time contained as much as half their weight in arsenic, meaning that a ball gown fashioned from 20 yards of this fabric would have 900 grains of arsenic which powdered off whilst dancing. A 'grain' is based on an amount of 64.8 mg which is the weight of a wheat grain. Four or five grains were lethal for an adult, the BMJ called green clad women 'Femmes Fatales'. I dye my verde green silks myself, the modern dyes are not poisonous to wear...
