In the 19th century the first widely available green dye was developed using arsenic. Verde green dresses of the time contained as much as half their weight in arsenic, meaning that a ball gown fashioned from 20 yards of this fabric would have 900 grains of arsenic which powdered off whilst dancing. A 'grain' is based on an amount of 64.8 mg which is the weight of a wheat grain. Four or five grains were lethal for an adult, the BMJ called green clad women 'Femmes Fatales'. I dye my verde green silks myself, the modern dyes are not poisonous to wear...
